BIOM5001 / BMG5101 - Assignment #3

    1. The oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve shifts right with increasing temperature, and left with decreasing temperature. Describe a scenario in which this is a good thing, and explain why.
    2. Based on the figure given on page 9.10 of the second set of notes, we saw that FRC varies with posture. Based on the chest wall PV curve, show how abdominal mass will change the various curves.
    3. A subject has RL= 0.2 kPa⋅s/L and CL= 1 L/kPa. She is breathing sinusoidally with a VT of 1L at 10 breaths/min. Show the shape of the Flow/Volume and Pressure/Volume loops. What will happen if VT changes to 0.5L at 20 breaths/min?
  1. Pick one disease from the list in the article on Respiratory Failure. Show each of the three models we discussed (Static mechanical model (Slide 11.7), Airflow mechanical model model (Slide 11.6), Oxygen transport model (Slide 11.4) ) and discuss which parameters change and how that contributes to the disease pathology.
  2. Pick one type of Mechanical Ventilattion. Using the models and the repiratory failure disease you chose in the previous question, show a graph of Pawo, Ppl, VL and V'L (flow) as a function of time. Discuss briefly what is happening in the ventilator and one advantage of the ventilator mode.
