I've been involved with the Carleton Ravens Swim Team for many years, though not quite from the beginning. I started training with the team in 1989. Then in 2001 I got involved with coaching and managing the team. I'm going to quickly go over some highlights from the 40 years of history. 1981-1982: - swim club started at Carleton by Tom Anzai - the swim team bursary was recently renamed in Tom's honour after his untimely death in 2017 1985-1986: - team granted Varsity status - breaststroker Chris Pilon wins male OUA swimmer of the meet honours 1988-1989: - men 4th at OUAs - sprinter Stepan Oliva CU male athlete of the year 1992-1993: - Don Burton U Sport bronze medal in 50m breaststroke, only Carleton swimming U Sport medallist to date - also CU male athlete of the year 1994-1995: - breaststroker Erica Kotler CU female athlete of the year 1997-1998: - men won OUA East Division 2004-2005: - men won Eynon Division Championships 2005-2006: - breaststroker Keegan Harris CU male graduating athlete of the year 2007-2008: - competitive club status - local team ROC Swimming took over administration of team - expense and lack of University "feel" took its toll - over the next few years the team shrunk to single digits 2016-2017: - under the leadership of then Head Coach Brian Hill, the team moved back under University management - with some very successful Future Funder campaigns, thanks to our alumni, we were able to reduce the fees somewhat and over the past few years the team has grown back to close to the maximum competition contingent 2019-2020: - first New Year's Florida training camp in over a decade 2020-2021: - 40th season (36th since Varsity status first achieved) - thrilled to have Pierre Lafontaine as the new head coach - you've heard some of his plans for the team - swimmers are very excited about this new era for the team
