Jini takes advantage of
Java technology. Jini consists of a small amount of Java code in class
library form and some conventions to create a "federation" of Java virtual
machines on the network, similar to the creation of a community today.
Network citizens such as people, devices, data, and applications within
this federation are dynamically connected to share information and perform
tasks.
Here is an opportunity to see a real Network Management applications written
in Java:
MIB Browser (Advent
Network Management, Inc) is an applet that can be used from within any
Java-capable Web browser to view a MIB.
Intended for use in the small to medium LAN environment, MIB
Master allows allows you to view and modify your SNMP agents using
any World Wide Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer.
It provides a simple and intuitive interface without encumbering you with
lots of features you will never use.
There are a number of Web sites devoted to a broader area of Web-based
network management. Most of Web-based NM tools incorporate in one way or
another Java. Most of the tools use Java for building NM applets that are
used to integrate data from existing legacy systems. Others go a bit further
in using Java to implement systems based on SNMP or CMIP. Some systems
disregard these standards and use other things (HTTP, HTML). A number of
centers are active in applying Java APIs (RMI, JMAPI) to management. The
following are the list that have links to relevant resources:
