OCIECE Graduate Course Policies

OCIECE students are those enrolled in the regular MEng and PhD. These policies do not apply to the students in the MSc in ISS or the MEng in TTM. The date each policy was passed by the OCIECE Board of Management is indicated.

Course Exclusions
November 1, 1994

Departments should regularly inform faculty and students of the policy that students should not take courses for credit for which they have already passed an equivalent course (graduate or undergraduate).

Course Access Control
May 14, 1995

In high-demand graduate courses (e.g. those with enrollment above 25 in the previous academic year), registrations for special students can be deferred until the first official day of classes. This will allow us to accommodate full and part time students first. Further, special students can be asked to apply in writing, listing their qualifications for admission to the course, so that where space is limited, only the best qualified are admitted. It is recognized that there may be cases requiring special consideration, e.g. full time students arriving from abroad after the first day of classes.

Minimum Passing Grade
November 1, 1994

For OCIECE students, the minimum passing grade in OCIEE courses offered at Carleton will be B- (the crediting of C+ grades in special cases will not be allowed), and in OCIECE courses offered at the University of Ottawa will be B. This will be effective fall 1995.

Directed Studies
November 1, 1994

Directed studies courses will follow one of the two following models. In either case, the instructor must submit a detailed course description to the Department for approval, including a plan of how the student will be graded.

Course model: allows students to take a course listed in the calendar when numbers are insufficient to warrant formal scheduling of a class. The usual set of assignments, projects, and examinations appropriate to the course should be administered to the student.

Research model: allows students to conduct a research project independent of their thesis research. A formal report is required. Grading is by consultation between the instructor (who should not be the student's thesis supervisor) and a co-reader. Course description should be a 2-3 page outline of the research to be done, the research methodology, and the research outputs.

Progress to Completion
November 1, 1994

The OCIECE expects the following for students with standard degree requirements. Special cases will be considered individually.

For Full-time Master's thesis students (not project students):
expected to complete course work after the first two terms of full-time fall or winter registration. expected to have arranged a thesis supervisor and begun research by the mid-point of the second term of full-time registration. will not be provided any scholarship or RA funding after two years of full-time registration. Where possible, TA funding will also be denied.

For PhD students:
expected to complete course work after the first two terms of full-time fall or winter registration. expected to have arranged a thesis supervisor and begun research by the mid-point of the second term of full-time registration. expected to have completed the written and oral Comprehensive Exams and submitted the Thesis Proposal within the first two years of full-time registration. will not be provided any scholarship or RA funding after five years of full-time registration. Where possible, TA funding will also be denied.
