Resources for Aspiring Researchers

New graduate students, especially those with a few years of industry experience, are often eager to start building a publication record but are unsure how to get started.  This page compiles links, resources, and some advice to address some of questions that I hear most often.

Publishing at conferences

This section provides links to various technical and scholarly conferences that publish papers in areas closely associated with my research interests.  These conferences are possible outlets for high-quality graduate student term papers and course assignments.

Research into Technology Innovation Management (TIM) is inherently cross-discipline.  It cuts across the  domains of engineering, computer science, and management, and traditional business areas such as strategy, operations management, marketing, and finance.  There are conferences specifically devoted to engineering management, management conferences with technology management tracks, engineering conferences with management tracks, conferences devoted to the management of projects, and highly-focused specialty conferences on special topics (such as open source software or open educational resources).

Engineering Management

Conferences in this category publish papers on engineering management, the management of technology, and technology management.

ITMC (formerly IEMC):
The International Technology Management Conference is the flagship conference of  IEEE Technology Management Council (TMC).  TMC publishes the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and the Engineering Management Review -- two of the top-ranked journals in the field.

  • Information on ITMC 2009 is not yet available.

Prior to January 1 2008, the TMC was called the IEEE Engineering Management Society (EMS), and its flagship conference was called the International Engineering Management Conference (IEMC).

IAMOT:
The International Conference on Management of Technology is organized by the International Association for Management of Technology.  IAMOT is closely associated with Technovation -- a highly-ranked international journal that publishes articles on innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology management.

  • IAMOT 2009 will be in Orlando Florida (April 5-9).
    • The conference theme is Management of Green Technology.
    • Abstracts due November 1 2008.
  • IAMOT 2008 was in Dubai (April 6-10).
  • IAMOT 2007 was in Miami, Florida (May 13-17).

PICMET:
The Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology is another annual conference held at different locations throughout the world.

  • PICMET '09 will be in Portland, Oregon (August 2-6).
    • The conference theme is Technology Management in the Age of Fundamental Change.
    • Abstracts due in December 2008.
  • PICMET '08 was in Cape Town, South Africa (July 27-31).
  • PICMET '07 was in Portland, Oregon (August 5-9)

Management / Business

If you have a high-quality paper with a strong management focus, you could consider submitting it to a management conference with a technology track.  Although the audience and scope of these conferences is much different, both AoM and ASAC have tracks which publish papers on engineering management topics.

AoM:
The Academy of Management holds an annual meeting each summer.  The Technology and Innovation Management Division is one of the larger groups within AoM.

ASAC:
The Administrative Sciences Association of Canada is the national association of Canadian university management professors.  ASAC's Technology and Innovation Management division hosts a presentation track each year at the annual conference .

  • ASAC 2009 will be in Waterloo, Ontario (June 6-9) at the Wilfred Laurier School of Business and Economics.
    • The conference theme is Creating Knowledge in the New Economy.
    • Full papers due January 2009.
  • ASAC 2008 was in Halifax, Nova Scotia (May 24-27)
  • ASAC 2007 was in Ottawa, Ontario (June 2-5)

Software Engineering

If your work is specific to software projects, you could consider presenting it in a forum focused specifically on software engineering.  The two prominent technical organizations in this area are the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery).  Both have special interest groups or technical societies whose interests overlap with the scope of TIM research.  The number of conferences in this category is vast.

IEEE Computer Society:
The IEEE Computer Society is the largest society within the IEEE.  Its resources, including the full calendar of upcoming conferences, are best accessed through IEEE Xplore [Carleton University Library Patron Barcode Required].

ACM SIGSOFT and ACM SIGPLAN:
The Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSOFT) hosts several popular and high quality software engineering conferences including the International Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE) and the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE)

  • ICSE 2009 will be in Vancouver, British Columbia (May 16-24 2009)
    • Abstracts due August 29 2008.
    • Full papers due September 5 2008.
  • SIGSOFT 2008 / FSE 16 was in Atlanta, Georgia (November 9-15)
  • ICSE 2008 was in Leipzig, Germany (May 10-18)

The ACM Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN) hosts OOPSLA (Object-oriented Programming, Systems, Languages, and Applications), which (despite its name) is broadly interested in the practice of software development.  The OOPSLA program includes technical paper sessions and workshops interested in TIM research, such as the Workshop on the Integration of Open Source Components into Large Software Systems

  • OOPSLA 2009 will be at Walt Disney World resorts in Orlando, Florida (October 25-29)
    • Submissions due March 19 2009.
  • OOPSLA 2008 was in Nashville, Tennessee (October 19-23)
  • OOPSLA 2007 was in Montreal, Quebec (October 21-25)

ACM resources, including the full calendar of upcoming conferences, are best accessed through the ACM Digital Library [Carleton University Library Patron Barcode Required].

Project Management

The Ottawa Valley Outaouais Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI OVOC) organizes an annual Project Management Symposium and Seminar Series, which includes a student forum on project management.  The 2008 event was November 4-6 at the Hampton Inn in Ottawa Canada.

Open Source Software and Open Innovation

OSS:
The International Conference on Open Source Systems addresses the full breadth of open source research including open development practices, open source communities and platforms, and open source adoption and quality.

  • OSS 2009 will be in Skövde, Sweden (June 3-6).
    • Full papers due November 1 2008.
  • OSS 2008 was in Milan, Italy (September 7-10).
  • OSS 2007 was in Limerick, Ireland (June 11-14).

MCETECH Conference on e-Technologies:
The Multi-discipline Conference on e-Technologies brings together researchers, decision makers, and practitioners to explore the many facets of Internet applications and technologies.

MCETECH 2009 is a great opportunity for Carleton students to publish your research.  The scope is quite broad and inclusive, the event is hosted here at Carleton University (in the Azrieli Pavilion and Theatre), and there will be an open source track.  My TIM colleague, Prof. Michael Weiss, is the Conference Chair for 2009.

  • MCETECH 2009 will be hosted at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada (May 4-6).
    • Full papers due November 1 2008.
    • The conference theme is Innovation in an Open World.
  • MCETECH 2008 was in Montreal, Canada (January 23-25).

Specialty Conferences

My interdisciplinary research interests sometimes overlap with the scope of various specialty conferences that would not normally be considered outlets for technology management research.

ISTAS:
The International Symposium on Technology and Society is the annual conference of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT).  It publishes papers on the social, cultural, political, and economic impact of information and communication technologies, from researchers and students in engineering, computer science, social sciences, arts and humanities.

  • ISTAS 2009 will be in Phoenix, Arizona (May 18-20).
