Saturday
Reminder!!
Don’t forget that the Saturday
morning times for this season are 8:30-9:30am or 9:30-10:30am (30min later than
last season).
Weekly Social
Events
Did you know about the regular
weekly social events?  A group goes out for dinner after the Thursday
Whitecaps workout.  A group goes out for drinks after some Thursday
Nightcaps workouts.  And a group goes to brunch at the Greek Souvlaki House
(Heron & Prince of Wales) after the later Saturday workout.  The size
of the groups varies from week to week and new swimmers are always
welcome!  Ask your lane-mates or coach for more
information.

Notes
Birth Announcement:
Jeffrey
Furry (x-7:30am Earlybirds), Julie Deschenes-Furry (7:30am Earlybirds)
and Laurent are proud to announce the birth of Élise Amélie Furry, born
yesterday morning, October 13th at 8:40am.  Élise entered the world after
16 hours of labour weighing 7 lbs 10 oz.  Mom and baby are both doing
extremely well and returned home the same day from the hospital.  Dad is
busy learning how to insert French accents into e-mails.  A small album of
pictures is posted on-line.
Swimmers in the
News:  Two of
the 7:30am Masters were featured in the Thu Oct 4th Ottawa South
local newspaper (The News EMC) on consecutive
pages:

p.19. Jim Lee (7:30am Earlybirds and stroke
survivor) buying the first leaf of “Tree of Life” at Merivale Mall Shoppers Drug
Mart.  This is a fundraiser for local
hospitals.
p.20. Sean Kelly (7:30am Earlybirds) playing Alex
Cullen in a mystery dinner last year, with an accompanying article on this
year’s event in which Sean will also play a leading
role.
   Thanks to Sean for
bringing this to my attention.
New Fly
Drill?!:  For those who didn’t find the
recent fly drills challenging enough, a 10 year old Chinese girl, Huang Li,
recently swam 3.2km in 3hrs in a tributary of the Yangtze river with her ankles
and wrists bound: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article2588962.ece.

Ask the
Coach
Dear
Coach:  Can you please
remind swimmers that if they arrive late, they should join in with their
lane-mates and not start the warm up from the beginning?  Punctual
Swimmer
Dear P.
Swimmer:  Done!  Do let your coach know if someone in your lane isn’t
following proper lane etiquette and he/she will speak to the swimmer.  We
have a lot of new swimmers this time of year, and some are still learning the
ropes!
Dear
Coach:  Why are
the change rooms so COLD???  A Frozen
Swimmer
Dear A.F.
Swimmer:  The University changes each building from A/C to heat (and vice
versa) on a fixed schedule.  The heat should be turned on in Athletics on
Mon Oct 15th, so the temperature should be better then.
Dear
Coach:  Can you
explain how to use the pace clock?  New
Swimmer
Dear N.
Swimmer:  Sure!  Swimmers should be following the pace clocks on the
pool deck during the main set of their workout.  (All the pace clocks on
deck have their “red” hands synchronized.)  If you have trouble seeing the
pace clock, prescription swimming goggles are recommended.  These can be
purchased for about $25 at Sports Experts.  If you insist on using a wrist
watch, ensure that your wrist watch is synchronized with the “red” hand on the
pace clocks.  When you are given a set, e.g. 5 x 100 @ 1:50, the time is
the amount of time for your swim plus your
rest.  Thus, if you started the first 100 on the red top (red 60), you
would start the second 100 on the red 50, the 3rd on the 40,
4th on the 30 and last one on the 20.  If the swim takes you
1:30, you’d get 20 seconds rest.  If it takes you 1:45, you’d get just 5
seconds rest.  If it takes you 1:55, you would miss the pace time (negative
5 seconds rest!).  If you often miss the pace time, talk to your coach
about a better lane for you.  For shorter distances, as it’s unlikely that
you’d be getting more than one minute rest, you can generally ignore the minute
hand.  Even for longer distances, it’s better to keep track of the minutes
in your head (rather than using the black hand on the clock).  If you have
trouble keeping track of the minutes, or are having trouble with “pace clock
math” ask your coach for help.
