Fall Session
End
The Fall session ends on Sat Dec 16th.  The Winter

Winter Term
Registration
Registration for the Winter Term for
all Athletics programs has started.  Note that the only Masters groups
continuing after Christmas without the need to re-register are the High
Intensity groups.  For all other groups (Earlybirds, Whitecaps, Nightcaps),
a new Winter registration is required.  Register early to avoid
disappointment.  Winter Masters groups start on Tue Jan 2nd /
Wed Jan 3rd.  Note that although the 6:30am group doesn’t start
until the end of February, registration for that group does open on Mon Nov
20th.  If you want to switch from another group to the 6:30am
group, let the Customer Service staff know when you register.  Details on
programs, dates and cost can be found in the “Reminders” section below.
You can register on-line at: https://secure.e-registernow.com/cgi-bin/mkpayment.cgi?state=742.

Nov

Six Carleton swimmers took part in
this meet.  We don’t yet have the full official results with placings, but
Gi and Rob were able to record most of the times.  Here’s a
summary…
Gi
(Whitecaps “A”; 18-24): broke 30 for
50fs (29.79), 40 for 50br (39.42). and 1:10 for 100fs (1:08.20) for the first
time!  Great work!
Lina (Whitecaps
“A”; 50-54): in her first meet in over a year, she set some benchmark times to
improve on when she changes age groups in January.
Jose (Whitecaps
“A”; 50-54): swam the freestyle events, with a time of 36.03 in the
50.
Rob
T (HI 1 & 2; 50-54): raced 7(!)
events, finishing just over his PBs
Andrew
P (Whitecaps “B”; 55-59): club
records in 50fs (33.91) and 100br (1:31.95) – well
done!
George (Whitecaps
“B”; 80-84): had the pleasure of racing two other over-80 men, but tells me that
he wasn’t too happy with his times!

Ask the
Coach

Dear Coach:
What did that
rude word you wrote on the blackboard the other day really mean?  Curious
Swimmer
Dear C.
Swimmer:  “Fartlek” is a Swedish word that means “speed-play”.  That
was the term I used for the workout where you were switching from moderate to
fast and back each time I blew the whistle.  The term came into use in the
1930s when this type of workout was introduced in cross-country running by
Swedish coach Gosta Holmer.  See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fartlek.

Dear
Coach:  Is it
permitted to use a mix of dolphin and whip kick on butterfly?  Wanna-Be
Flyer
Dear W-B.
Flyer:  In Masters competitions, it is permitted to use a whip kick or
dolphin kick (or a mixture) on butterfly.  Note, however, that this is not
permitted in any other swimming competitions, where only dolphin kick is
allowed.
Dear Coach:
Can you explain
the new rule about the dolphin kick on the breaststroke turn?  Need Better
Turns
Dear N.B.
Turns:  You are now permitted one dolphin kick as part of the breaststroke
underwater pull-out.  Due to the wording of the rule, the safest way to do
this is first to ensure that you remain submerged (i.e. completely underwater)
throughout the pull-out (i.e. when you push off the wall or dive in
breaststroke).  Secondly, the dolphin kick should be done while you are
pulling back with your arms, as they go under the hips (where the 2nd
kick in a fly stroke goes).  As your arms go under your hips, there is a
natural tendency to bend at the waist making it appear that a dolphin kick is
taking place, so that’s the time to do it (otherwise it may look like you are
doing two dolphin kicks, which is not permitted).  This rule was introduced
as it was very difficult to judge whether a dolphin kick took place at that
point in the stroke.
