Swimmer
Notes
Wedding
Congratulations:

Congrats to Lila Miners (Whitecaps “A” and Pool Staff)
who married Mike Kelland, brother of Amy Kelland (Pool Staff) on Sun Aug
6th.
   Congrats also to
Andy Jones (High Intensity 3,
x-6:30am/Whitecaps “A”) and Lily (Ilona)
Csepregi Jones (x-Whitecaps “A”) who were married at
   We did something a
little different.  You know Lil does tri's too... She had a fantastic year
racing...  Me on the other hand took the year off due to injury...
Hopefully by begin of Nov everything will be straightened out and I can train
full on again.
   So anyway, we fell in
love training up at Meech and in the park.  So for the wedding we did a 2km
swim into Blanchet and then had a wonderful ceremony with Mike Caldwell
officiating (he's a triathlete and adventure racer) and the kids all around and
100 of our closest friends. Then to top it off we rode away on out bikes into
the sunset (actually it was cloudy and cold, but into the hills)... What a
wonderful day we had... I am a lucky man to have met and get to spend the rest
of my life with Lily. She is my dream come true!

Swimmer in the
News:  Francois Parent (Whitecaps “A”) is featured in an
article on “Living with Tourette’s: Meet six people who are beating the odds” in
the October 2006 issue of Canadian Living (on newsstands now).  The
articles from this issue are not yet on the web site, but should eventually be
posted at: http://www.canadianliving.com.

Watches at Swim
Meets / Open Water Swims:  Note that FINA has started
interpreting rule SW 10.7, which reads: “No
swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device that may aid his speed,
buoyancy or endurance during a competition (such as webbed gloves, flippers,
fins, etc.)  Goggles may be worn.”, to mean that it is not
permitted to wear a wrist watch while racing (in the pool or in open water).
Swimmers were disqualified for this at the Masters World Championships and
it was also enforced at the recent 5k MSO championships (where the majority of
us have worn a watch in the past to help count the 11 laps!).  Here’s yet
another good reason to use the pace clocks at the pool (rather than rely on your
watch!).
Date for Carleton
Alumni Diaries:  If you swam or played water
polo for Carleton please make note of the “Aquatic Alumni Nite” to be held Sat
Nov 4th.  It will run 4-9pm with men’s and women’s water polo
games (4-7pm), plus a swim meet (7-9pm).  Please pass this information
along to any alumni you know!
Carleton Swim Suits:
Suits will be available in the
mid-October time-frame.

Ask the
Coach

Dear
Coach:
Why should I breathe on both sides in freestyle?  One-Side
Breather
Dear O.-S.
Breather:  The best way to keep your stroke symmetrical and avoid injury is
to breathe on both sides.  If you find it difficult to bilateral breathe,
you can instead change the side that you breathe on every length (or every
50m).  Ideally you want to take the same number of breaths on your left and
your right over the course of a workout.  It’s ok to switch back to your
preferred side when sprinting or racing.  The longer you’ve been breathing
on one side, the harder it will be to change.  However, drill sets give you
a great chance to practice.
Dear
Coach:  Why
should I bring a water bottle to practice?  A
Non-Drinker
Dear
A.N.-Drinker:  Most of us spend a lot of our lives partially
de-hydrated.  By the time you feel thirsty it’s too late.  Drinking a
lot of fluids before, during, and after workout will help you perform better,
and avoid muscle cramps, headaches, and dizziness.  It’s also important to
get some food into you before a workout (especially if you train in the
morning).  An in-depth article can be found at: http://www.usaswimming.org/USASWeb/ViewMiscArticle.aspx?TabId=395&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en&mid=614&ItemId=528.
