Abstract

Radio resource management for multimedia CDMA wireless networks is the main focus of this thesis. We specialized on power management and call admission control due to their important roles in a comprehensive radio resource management scheme.

Bandwidth efficiency for a radio resource management technique is the most important requirement in a wireless medium with limited available bandwidth. In a CDMA cell with a mixture of different media with different quality of service requirement, efficient integration of traffic is a challenging task.

A novel joint access control and power assignment framework is proposed in this thesis. Power assignment algorithm provides the diverse required quality of services by the users through assigning the appropriate amount of power to the users while access control monitors the number of users allowed in the cell in a way that guarantees the existence of a solution for the power assignment algorithm.

A call admission control scheme based on a modified equivalent bandwidth technique is proposed. On-line measurement of total interference at the base station is used to adjust the admission control policy.

We have shown that the proposed joint admission control and power assignment strategy is an effective method in providing guaranteed quality of service for real time multimedia traffic in an outdoor CDMA network.
