Dr. David C. Coll: Biography

David C. Coll received the B.Eng. degree in Engineering Physics and the M.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from McGill University,Montreal. He studied Information Theory at the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology , Cambridge, and received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University.

From 1956 to 1967, he was with the Defence Research Board of Canada where he worked in communications and signal processing. In 1967 he joined the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University. He was Chairman of the Department from 1975 to 1978 and again in 1988/89.  Prof. Coll retired from fulltime teaching and research in 1998, and was appointed Professor Emeritus, and continues his activities at the University as well as his consulting practice.

Professor Coll lectures in the areas of Computer and Communications Engineering. His professional interests are in the broad field of information technology (telecommunications, computers and signal processing) and its applications, particularly digital television and communications in broadband multimedia networks. His current research is focused on the use of video-based,multimedia telecommunications in distance education. He is also concerned with the philosophy of technology and its societal impact, engineering education, and the practice of professional engineering.

Dr. Coll is a Life Fellow of the IEEE,and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a member of SMPTE and a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.

Dr. Coll has been a member, and Chair, of the Academic RequirementsCommittee of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario; Co-Chair of the Appraisals Committee of the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies, the Chair of the CCPE 1998 Computer Engineering Syllabus Committee, and a member of the Canadian JTC1/SC29 Multimedia and Hypermedia Standards Advisory Committee.

Dr. Coll is the President of DCCInformatics Incorporated, a company providing professional engineering services in broadband, multimedia communication systems.
