John W. Chinneck is a professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering. His degrees are from the University of Waterloo in Systems Design Engineering (BASc 1977, MASc 1978, PhD 1983).
Professor Chinneck conducts research in the general area of applied optimization, including various applications in engineering. He has a special interest in the development of computer tools that assist in the formulation and analysis of very large and complex optimization models. His algorithms for the analysis of infeasible linear programs have been incorporated in many commercial linear programming solvers, including LINDO, CPLEX, XPRESS-MP, Frontline Systems Excel solvers, and IBM's OSL. Two of his computer programs are available elsewhere on this site: MProbe for analyzing the "shape" of arbitrary nonlinear functions of high dimension, and MINOS(IIS) for analyzing infeasibility in linear programs.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the INFORMS Journal on Computing, which covers the interface between Operations Research and Computer Science, and a member of the editorial board for Computational Management Science. He is the past Chair of the INFORMS Computing Society, the INFORMS group that covers the same area.
Professor Chinneck has several years of consulting experience, including co-founding and operating a multi-person consulting engineering practice (Enermodal Engineering Limited). Experience also includes a stint as an energy conservation engineer for a large integrated steel manufacturer.
Professor Chinneck was awarded a Scholarly Achievement Award in 1988 by Carleton University, a Research Achievement Award in 1995 by Carleton University, and an IBM Faculty Award in 2006. He was the Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Engineering and Design during 2003-2006. He was Chair of the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering in 2000-2001, and Associate Chair during 1997-1999 and 2001-2006. He is an elected member of the university's Board of Governors.
