Biomedical Signal Quality Analysis
Recent advances in technology has enabled significant changes in biomedical monitoring, such as continuous monitoring, pervasive monitoring, high density multichannel monitoring, wearable monitoring, and remote monitoring. This drastically increases the amount of biomedical data and simultaneously reduces the quality of the data, as data are no longer being acquired in controlled environments by highly trained personnel. Currently, verification of the quality of biomedical data is often performed by a human operator; however, this is becoming impractical or infeasible with amount of data and real-time constraints. Signal processing methods that are employed to extract useful information from biomedical data often assumes adequate signal quality. Contaminants in the data can lead to erroneous results and conclusions.
We are researching and developing biomedical signal quality analysis methods that are fully automated. Biomedical signal quality analysis can be broken down into four categories :
- detection: determining whether or not contaminants, beyond a certain threshold level, are present
- identification: determining the type (and potentially source) of contaminants
- quantification: estimating the level of contamination
- mitigation: remove or reduce the level of contamination, while preserving the desired data
Biomedical signal quality analysis can alert operators of issues arising during data collection and inform them how to resolve them. Biomedical signal quality analysis can also ensure adequate signal quality prior to employ subsequent signal processing methods.
