• December 24th: The marks have been submitted for approval. Happy Holidays!

• December 21st: As some of you are asking about final grades, here is some information. I have 10 days from the date of the final exam to complete the marking and submit the marks. Based on the current progress, it will likely take me the full ten days to get the marks in (i.e. Dec 24th). I will post a note here after I submit the marks. After that, the marks must be approved by the Chair of the Systems Department and then by the Dean's Office. That usually takes one to two weeks, but I have no control over that. So, please be patient!

• December 19th: The marks have been released for Assignment #5.

• December 15th: The project marks (out of 20) have been sent to each group by e-mail.

• December 12th: Sample Solutions have been posted for Assignment #5.

If you completed one course, you get 1 bonus mark. If you completed two (or more), you get 2 bonus marks. Please note the following: In order to receive acknowledgment for participation in the Incentive Program, students must have adhered to the policies for participation (such as staying for the duration of the workshop, completing the workshop in the same term the course is registered, etc. These policies can be found here: http://carleton.ca/csas/incentive-program/), and must have completed the workshops before the Fall Term deadline of December 2nd, 2016 at 11:59pm. The deadline for submitting your peer assessment is Fri Dec 9th. Students who do not submit an assessment by the deadline will have one mark deducted from their project meeting mark. • November 23rd: Another way that you can change file permissions is using Eclipse.

• November 23rd: As promised, I have some information from one of the technicians on changing permissions on the lab computers. You are correct that permissions cannot be changed on files in "M". However, you can change the permissions on files in C:/Temp (and can run your TFTP client / server from that directory, if desired). Here are my notes on the steps that Jerry showed me: On the file or folder that you want to change the perms, right click and select security, then advanced, and change permissions. Untick include inheritable permissions, select "remove" in the window that comes up; then apply, and select "yes" in the window that comes up, and then ok. Go back under security, select edit, add your username(s) and ok, then select the permissions you want to allow. There is a dos command cacls that can help do this automatically (cacls /? for details).

• November 21st: The sample solutions to Assignment #4 have been posted. We will go over these in class next week.

• November 16th: We will schedule groups for the final project presentation in Monday's lecture, so please ensure that someone from your group attends and that your group representative knows everyone's availability for the week of Dec 5th. • November 15th: Here is the schedule for the team demos on Nov 21st and 22nd. Note that all teams will sign an affidavit stating that they will not discuss contents of the demo and/or project presentations with students outside their group. Demos must be done on the lab machines (not on laptops). In the Monday afternoon labs, teams will be asked to leave after their demos, and teams presenting at 2:30pm and 3pm must wait until 30min before their presentations to enter AA508, to avoid eavesdropping, congestion, and to keep the noise level down.   • first number (out of two): getting topic approved on time (marks deducted if late)
  • second number (out of two): length of summary (marks deducted if too short)
  • third number (out of two): appropriate format: name, title, conclusions, reference details, etc. (marks deducted if missing / incomplete)
  • fourth number (out of four): content (marks deducted for large number of spelling / grammar errors, insufficient details in summary, etc.)
  • optional fifth number (out of one): one mark deduction if the assignment was not submitted in pdf format, e.g. word

• November 13th: Please note that if you submit files for testing your TFTP application via the submit program, I recommend "View"ing and "Save"ing your files after submission to check that the size hasn't changed. Automatically generated files may have "null"s removed, and other files may have carriage return plus line feed (2 bytes) added to them.

• October 24th: The Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities is still looking for a Volunteer Notetaker for this class. The criteria for being a Volunteer Notetaker includes:
  • Attending all assigned classes
  • Taking complete and legible notes
  • Typing or scanning lecture notes and submitting them electronically within 48-hours after each Class
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  Notes may be typed, but handwritten legible notes or notes containing math, symbols, or graphs can also be used and will be scanned into electronic format at the PMC Notetaking Office.
     Volunteers who successfully complete the term will receive a letter of recognition from the Paul Menton Centre. You will be assisting a fellow student meet their accommodation needs and facilitating their success in the course. Having to take good quality notes as a volunteer notetaker will benefit your learning in the course as well. Lastly, being a volunteer notetaker may prove to be a valuable addition to your resume.
     Volunteer work at Carleton, such as the notetaking service for students registered with PMC, can count towards your Co-Curricular Record, the official record of your extra-curricular activities at Carleton University, which may prove beneficial in securing employment or entering graduate school.

• October 24th: I have replied to all requests for Assignment #3 received to date. If you missed the deadline, you can still send in a request. The later I receive your request, the greater the deduction from your mark.
     Also, if you are interested in presenting your Assignment #3, please let me know by e-mail by Mon Nov 7th. If you have a preference between Nov 30th, Dec 5th, and Dec 7th for your presentation, let me know. I will be marking Assignment #3 and will prioritize the marking to start with the summaries of those who are presenting.

• October 10th: In early December, the SASC will send me a list of students and workshops completed. As a reminder, you can earn up to two bonus marks by completing SASC workshops in person or on-line. (One bonus mark per workshop.) Any workshops are acceptable, but the two that I recommend for this course are "Working in Groups" and "Effective Presentations".

We will look at some of these in class.

• September 28th: As we jumped around a little bit in the course material on Monday, here's what we did:
  • reviewed mutual exclusion and condition synchronization
  • reviewed lock diagrams: object, lock, blocked set, wait set
  • talked about a BoundedBuffer (basically, a Box with multiple items): this is the last part of slide package 5 and we'll look at the code today
  • walked through a lock diagram for a BoundedBuffer example discussing when we should notifyAll(): this is slide package 5b, plus a little on the Improved BoundedBuffer, and we'll look at the code for that today
  • walked through a lock diagram for a Box example assuming notify() instead of notifyAll(): this is slide package 5a
  • talked about project iteration 2 and ERROR packets: we'll talk a bit more about this today (parts of slide packages 12 and 13)
  • talked about assignment 2: we'll talk a bit more about this today
  • introduced the synchronized statement / block, so that we can have critical sections shorter than an entire method, and so that we can synchronize on something other than "this": this is the first part of slide package 8

• September 9th: For those of you in lab L2 (Mon 1:30-3:30pm), I'd hoped to be able to extend our time in AA508 until 4:00pm, but there is another lab for SYSC 1105 that starts right at 3:30pm. Thus, I have booked lab ME4324, which is the same configuration as AA508, from 2:30-4:00pm, to give us room to spread out during the last hour of the lab and to have some lab space from 3:30-4:00pm. ME4324 is pretty small but better than nothing! In addition, there is currently no class in ME4499 (our lecture room) on Monday between 2:30-4:00pm, so I am going to see if we can officially book that after registration ends (Sept 20th). In the meantime, we can use it, if it's free. So, to make a long story short, on Monday afternoons for working on assignments individually and for meeting with your team and working on the project we should have the following space:
  • 1:30-3:30pm: AA508 (75 computers)
  • 2:30-4:00pm: ME4324 (24 computers)
  • 2:30-4:00pm: ME4499 (lecture room)

• September 9th: Most Assignments and Project Iterations are due Saturdays at midnight. To clarify, midnight Saturday means the midnight between Saturday and Sunday, i.e. Saturday night.

• September 8th: The userid and password required to access the course material have been posted in cuLearn.

• September 1st: This course will involve a project done in teams of five. All team members must be able to attend (at least part of) the same lab section. If you already know who you would like to work with, you may send me the names and the lab section you will attend. The deadline for choosing your team is 8pm Tue Sept 13th. Those who do not e-mail me with team-mates will be assigned to a team.

• September 1st: Here is the information you need to create your account for the SCE labs (including CB5109/AA508): http://sce.carleton.ca/labs/accountcreation.html. Note that this link works only from a Carleton computer. You can also follow the instructions posted on the wall in the lab.

• September 1st: For those who want to get a head start on the course, the third assignment will involve writing a 5 page summary of a paper or paper(s) or article(s) (journal, web, newspaper, etc.) on any topic related to real-time concurrent systems. If you send me a pdf version or link to the article(s) that you are interested in and I approve it, then you can start your summary now. Note that you will have the option of presenting your summary in class towards the end of term for bonus marks.
