Interim Workouts

In between the end of the Fall session and the start of the Winter session, we are offering some interim workouts. Each workout costs $4.85 (the cost of a public swim pass). Note that these workouts are only open to those with a valid Athletics membership (or student/staff card) for the date/time of the workout. Note that if you have a morning-only membership, it is good all day on "reduced hours" days, i.e. all of these dates.

-       Guests (who do not have to be members) are welcome, if they pay the $4.85 fee and are accompanied by a member.

-       You must pay the public swim $4.85 fee at the Welcome Centre, get a receipt, write your name on the back, and give your receipt to the coach on deck before you get in the water. No receipt, no swim, no exceptions!!

Carleton Masters Holiday Party: Sat Dec 10th 6:30pm

Thanks once again to Don Wells (6pm Whitecaps) and Joanie Conrad (7:10pm Whitecaps), along with Sam and Ben (x-Safety Supervision) for hosting the Masters Christmas Potluck party.  It was, as usual, a great feast.  Obviously, I was not the only one who ate so much that I could no longer see my feet, as a wide assortment of footwear was left behind.  Please let Lynn know if any of the following belong to you:

Lost and Found

1.     Men’s green tartan Sorel slippers

2.     Men’s beige leather Roots slippers

3.     Women’s black dress shoes in NAC Orchestra bag

Also, as several of you asked Coach Mits for details on where he got the fancy chocolate coated Oreos, here is the information:  Mi Casa Catering and Chocolates; http://micasacatering.ca.

Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

- Congratulations to Amir Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds) and his wife Atefeh on the birth of their first child, daughter Ava, on Sun Dec 11th at 6:44pm.  Ava weighed in at 7lbs 3.5oz and all the family is doing well!

- Amir Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds, Carleton’s Systems and Engineering Department) also recently received a Graduate Student Mentoring Award: http://www5.carleton.ca/fgpa/2011-graduate-mentoring-awards-for-faculty/.  Congratulations, again!

- Here’s Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) talking about the new Centrepointe Theatre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iJH4dLcpTI&feature=share.

- Kevin Graham (7:30am Earlybirds) reports that his micro-fracture knee surgery (due to an old soccer injury) went well.  He will be back in the pool in January, once his joint mobility has improved, so that he can push off the walls!  Best wishes for a quick recovery, Kevin!

- Theresa Wallace (8:30am Earlybirds) is doing well after her double arthroscopic knee surgery.  She is walking without a limp and has been doing some pull in the small OAC pool.  Just a small amount of pain in her left knee at night.  Great to hear that you are progressing so well, Theresa, and hope to see you back in January!

- Ursula Scott (7:30am Earlybirds) sings with the Orpheus Choral Group which is performing its Christmas concert for family and friends on Sat Dec 17th at 7pm at the Riverside United Church, 3191 Riverside Drive, south of Walkley.  Admission is free but donations accepted.  Refreshments served afterwards.

- As many of you know, Debby Whately (6pm Whitecaps) is an avid paddler.  Her Dragon boat team is having a fundraiser selling Organic Free Trade Coffee.  They are selling one pound bags for $15. They have a medium dark roast in regular or decaf and you can get beans, regular grind or expresso grind.  If you are interested, please talk to Debby at workout or contact her via e-mail at: whately@cheo.on.ca.

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Fall session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

Fifty four swimmers (27 women and 27 men) improved in at least one event.  I believe that’s the largest number ever – well done, all!!  The most improved (again!) was Christian Cattan (7:30am Earlybirds).  He improved his 200fs by 48.6 seconds (24.3sec/100m).  Next, and most improved woman was Amelia Zimmermann (6pm Whitecaps) for a 3:49 (15.3sec/100m) improvement in her 1500fs.  She was followed by Natalie Aucoin (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 100fl by 11.2 seconds (and that’s compared to a meet time!).  Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps was the second most improved man for an improvement of 17.9 seconds (9.0sec/100m) in his 200fs.  Rounding out the top 3 for the women was Margaret King (7:30am Earlybirds) with an improvement of 4.0 seconds (8.0sec/100m) in 50fl.  Third most improved man was Joan Bou (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 50fs by 3.8 seconds (7.6sec/100m) between the end of October and mid-December!  Christian, Fouad Hejazi (7:30am Earlybirds), and Robert Fabes (7:30am Earlybirds) each improved in five different events.  Amelia, Margaret, and Sean Dawson (6pm Whitecaps / 8:30am Earlybirds) improved in four different events.

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  Twenty swimmers (9 women and 11 men) scored over 400 points in at least one event.  Top scorer overall was Sean Dawson (6pm Whitecaps / 8:30am Earlybirds) with a whopping 725 points for his 24.6 50fs relay split.  Next was guest Audrey Prayal Brown with 660 points for 36.5 in her 50br.  Tony Revitt (8:30am Earlybirds) was second male with 578 points for his 59.9 100fs (first time under 1:00)!  Mark Blenkinsop (8:30am Earlybirds) was the third male with 556 for 29.5 in 50fl.  Top Carleton woman was Amelia Zimmermann (6pm Whitecaps) with 544 for 31.6 in her 50fs.  This is the first time a swimmer has been both the fastest and most improved in the same term!  Well done, Amelia!  Rounding out the top three for the women were Tricia Gerrow (6pm Whitecaps) with 466 for 3:00.3 in 200IM, and Erin Kelly (6pm Whitecaps) with 461 for her 22:38 1500fs.  Sean and Jamie Wildsmith (6pm Whitecaps) each scored over 400 points in seven different events, while Tony scored over 400 points in six.

All those improving and all those scoring over 400 points, as well as the top 3 improvements and the top 3 times for each event are listed below, as are the results of the relays.

Many thanks to all of you who participated in the time trials!

Fastest Three Times in Each Event:

The numbers in parentheses below the event indicate the number of female and male, respectively, time trials in that event (some swimmers may have done more than one time trial of the same event).  If times are really close, more than 3 swimmers are included.  Note that only those over 18:00 are shown for the 800.  Those under 18:00 should swim the 1500 instead!

Race Results: (Please send in your results, and/or let me know if I missed your name!!)

Sat Dec 10th Mad Trapper 5k Trail Run

Due to lack of snow, this snowshoe run became a trail run.  This didn’t deter Lucie Boudreau (8:30am Earlybirds) who completed the 5k hilly course in 40:20, for second woman overall, for which she received a prize!  Congratulations, Lucie!  Glad to see that the foot is getting better.

Sun Dec 11th North York Pentathlon Meet

Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps) was Carleton’s only representative.  He swam the pentathlon events: 50fl, 50bk, 50br, 50fs, and 100IM, but unfortunately, likely due to a rapidly recovering shoulder injury, is disappointed to report that he did not do any PBs.  Full results not yet available.  Jamie did a full slate of meets this year, and this is the first one without any improvements (and with a good reason), so in all a fantastic first year of competitions for him!  Well done, Jamie!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Can you please explain the procedure for the time trials, as I’m never sure if I’m doing the right thing!  New Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  Sure, great question!  Except for the 800/1500 where the rules are different and are announced before that swim, the other time trials work as follows.  Everyone is divided up into heats.  For the short distances (50s, and 100s) each swimmer usually has his/her own lane.  For the mid-distance time trials (200s, 400s), the freestylers usually share a lane (i.e. two swimmers, one staying on the left of the lane, the other staying on the right of the lane).  Heat one does their time trial first, followed by heat two, etc.  You should be ready to go when the heat before you finishes.  That means that you should be standing behind the lane you are going to swim (at the appropriate side, if applicable), plus have your suit tied up, and other equipment (cap, goggles, nose clips, ear plugs, as applicable) in place.  Don’t move forward or get in the water until I have cleared the previous heat and called your heat.  At that time I’ll ask that anyone starting in the water get in, and give a 5 second warning, and then “take your marks”, and “go”.  You must be perfectly still when I say “go” (i.e. you cannot try to anticipate the start).  During your time trial ensure that all your strokes and turns and finish are legal.  When you finish, stay in the water until I ask your heat to clear the pool.  If you don’t hear your time or have any other questions, ask right away (when I clear the pool), or after everyone has completed their time trial.  Following these guidelines will ensure that the time trials go quickly and smoothly for all!

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts at a time.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.  Another good resource is http://www.slowtwitch.com/.  Lots of free triathlon advice, a training log and challenges like the 100 runs in 100 days!

General Information: Program information, photos, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records, among other things, can be viewed at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.
