Summer Session Information

The time trials done in the Summer session were as follows:

Tue/Wed July 19/20th: 400 (all groups)

Thu/Fri July 28/29th: 50 and 100 (all groups)

Fri Aug 5th: 200 (Earlybirds)

Thu/Fri Sept 1/2nd: relays (all groups)

Many thanks to all those who participated in the relays on Thu Sept 1st / Fri Sept 2nd.  The morning group had a slight advantage due to being in the deep end (so they could dive in).  However, there were improvements in both groups.  The largest improvement was by Lucie Boudreau (7:30am Earlybirds).  She improved her 25bk by 1.5 seconds.  The next largest improvement was 2.3 seconds in 50fs by Norine Naguib (7:30am Earlybirds).  The biggest improvement on the men’s side was by Isaac Fierro Marquez (6pm Whitecaps), who improved his 50br by 1.2 seconds.  Here’s a list of all those who improved:

50fs

Norine Naguib (7:30am Earlybirds) 2.3

Christiane Wilke (7:30am Earlybirds) 0.9

Mike Mopas (7:30am Earlybirds) 0.9

Alan Jowett (7:30am Earlybirds) 0.5

Bruce Brown (7:30am Earlybirds) 0.3

Summer Session Summary

First a big thank you to Mits Kachi (Whitecaps and Saturday Coach), and to the other Saturday / substitute coaches this term: Tim Kilby, Claudia Cronin-Schlote, and Nico Belisle.

Here's the summary of the attendance and time trials for the Summer session.  If you notice any errors or omissions, please do let me know.  Those of you who earned awards (perfect attendance, top 3 most improved overall, top 3 fastest overall, relay winners overall) will receive certificates early in the Fall term or by e-mail.

Attendance:

There was just one swimmer with perfect weekday attendance this term.  Congratulations to Susan Hulley (7:30am Earlybirds).  Jamie Chalmers (6pm Whitecaps) came very close – his only mistake was showing up at 7:10pm for the first 6pm workout in July!

7:30am Earlybirds (July 4-September 2nd; 26 workouts; range: 17-32; average: 23.6):

Perfect Attendance: Susan H

Missed 2 Workouts: Alan J

Missed 4 Workouts: Christian C, Siobhan M

6pm Whitecaps (July 4-September 1st; 26 workouts; range: 8-22; average: 14.8):

Missed 1 Workout: Jamie C

Missed 7 Workouts: Mike L, Nicole D, Pete L

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Summer session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

Nine women and twelve men improved in at least one event.  The most improved overall was Christian Cattan (7:30am Earlybirds).  He improved his 100fs by 16.9 seconds!  Next, and the most improved woman was Susan Hulley (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 200fs by 15.3 seconds (7.7sec/100m).  She was followed by Dmitry Lysenko (6pm Whitecaps) with a 28.6 second improvement in his 400fs (7.2sec/100m) and Lucie Boudreau (7:30am Earlybirds) with a 1.5sec improvement in her 25bk (6.0sec/100m).  Rounding out the top 3 were Norine Naguib (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 50fs by 2.3sec (4.6sec/100m), and Bill Westcott (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 100fs by 3.5 seconds.  Stephanie Le Saux-Farmer (7:30am Earlybirds) improved in four different events!  Bill Westcott, Bruce Brown (7:30am Earlybirds), and Isaac Fierro Marquez (6pm Whitecaps) all improved in three events.

Masters Swimming Competitions

You must register annually with Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO) if you want to compete in Masters Swimming competitions.  Registration for 2011 is still available.  (Registration for 2012 will start in the Fall.)  Cost is $36 ($35 fee + $1 postage/handling).  Please pay by cash or cheque payable to “Lynn Marshall”.  Your MSO membership will be good until Dec 31st, 2011.  Contact Lynn for more details.  Note that you must register with MSO at least 3 weeks before the due date of the entry for your first competition.  For those who like to plan ahead, the MSO fees will remain the same for next year (2011-2012), but will very likely increase by at least $5 the following year, due to additional fees being requested by Masters Swimming Canada (MSC) for each MSO swimmer.

Full details on all Ontario Masters competitions can be found at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/competition/schedule01.htm.
For Quebec competitions see: https://www.swimming.ca/MeetInfo.aspx, select FNQ <show>, upcoming meets, then the appropriate month, then select the appropriate Masters meet to get more info.  If it says “sanctioned” the meet package should be available.

Here’s a list of tentative and confirmed upcoming nearby competitions (mostly) in Ontario and Quebec.  More meets and more details will be added as the information become available.  Note that meet entries and confirming meet information and entry dates are your responsibility.

Sun Aug 28th Canadian Masters (CANMAS) Canoe/Kayak Championships, Welland

Congratulations to Meredith Curren (returning to 7:30am Earlybirds this Fall) for her fantastic results (2 golds and a silver!), despite an appalling wind (due to Irene).  Meredith was first in her age group in women’s K1 and women’s K2.  She was second in women’s K4. She was also 4th in mixed K4, and 5th in mixed K2, despite competing against younger teams to make the team’s schedule work out.  Awesome job!!  The Rideau Canoe Club placed 3rd overall.  Full results at: http://www.canoekayak.ca/content/sprint_domestic_canmas.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Who is coaching the 6pm Whitecaps group this Fall?  Just Curious

Dear J. Curious:  The coaches for the Fall/Winter groups are listed below in the “Reminders” section, and are also listed on the web site.

Dear Coach:  Where should I push off the wall when swimming in a circle?  New Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  You should cross over to the far side on your way into the wall (i.e. before the turn), and then push off on the other side of the “cross” on the wall.  That way you can push off in a straight line, without any danger of hitting anyone swimming immediately behind you. The only exceptions to this are if you are 100% sure that you are the last one in the lane (i.e. there is no one right behind you), in which case it’s ok to push off in the middle or “wrong” side of the lane, and, if you’re doing backstroke, where you cannot see ahead of you to cross over safely, so it’s better to push off in the middle of the lane, carefully watching out for those behind you.

Dear Coach:  It is really necessary to sign up now for the Winter term?  High “Back to School” Credit Card Bill

Dear H.B.t.S.C.C. Bill:  It depends on what group you are swimming in.  As soon as a group fills up and a waiting list starts (see notes at the top of the newsletter for the full groups), those who missed getting a Fall spot will immediately grab a Winter spot, so it’s a good idea to sign up sooner rather than later.  For groups that haven’t yet filled up for Fall, it’s pretty safe to wait until later in the term to sign up for Winter.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts at a time.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.  Another good resource, recommended by Mike Sims (6pm Whitecaps), is http://www.slowtwitch.com/.  Lots of free triathlon advice, a training log and challenges like the 100 runs in 100 days!

General Information: Program information, photos, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records, among other things, can be viewed at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.
Your input to this newsletter is most welcome, especially for the Swimmer Notes, Race Results and Ask the Coach sections!  To be added to or removed from the receiver list, just let me know (lynnmarshall@sympatico.ca).

Happy lengths!
