Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Spring session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

Twenty women and eighteen men improved in at least one event!  The most improved swimmer (again!) was Cindy Steele (6pm Whitecaps) who improved her 400fs by 1:40.8 (25.2sec/100m).  Next was Lucie Boudreau (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 100IM by 15.2sec.  Third, and top male, was Isaac Fierro Marquez (6pm Whitecaps) who improved his 100fs by 14.5sec.  He was followed by Mindy Finkelstein (7:10pm Whitecaps) who improved her 400fs by 49sec (12.3/100m), and Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps) who improved his 400fs by 44.7sec (11.2/100m).  Rounding out the top 3 for the men was Gi Wu (6pm Whitecaps) who improved his 200fs by 17.1sec (8.6/100m).  Isaac and Mike Mopas (7:30am Earlybirds) both improved in five different events, while Susan Hulley (7:30am Earlybirds) improved in four!

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  Seven women and seven men scored over 400 points in at least one event.  Top scorer was Nico Belisle (8:30am Earlybirds) who earned 625 points for 2:08.9 in 200fs.  Next was Hilary March (6pm Whitecaps) with 620 for 30.1 in 50fs.  She was followed closely by Sean Dawson (6pm Whitecaps) with 616 for 58.0 in 100fs, and Andrea Zarins (6pm Whitecaps) with 607 for 1:15.2 in 100IM.  Rounding out the top three were Mark Blenkinsop (8:30am Earlybirds) with 499 points for 30.8 in 50fl, and Norine Naguib (7:30am Earlybirds) with 478 for 1:19.1 in 100fl.  Hilary scored over 400 points in five different events, while Andrea Z, Sean D, Nico, and Nathan Fudge (6pm Whitecaps) all scored over 400 points in four.

The numbers in parentheses below the event indicate the number of female and male, respectively, time trials in that event (some swimmers may have done more than one time trial of the same event).  If times are really close, more than 3 swimmers are included.  Note that only those over 18:00 are shown for the 800.  Those under 18:00 should swim the 1500 instead!

Full details on all Ontario Masters competitions can be found at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/competition/schedule01.htm.
For Quebec competitions see: https://www.swimming.ca/MeetInfo.aspx, select FNQ <show>, upcoming meets, then the appropriate month, then select the appropriate Masters meet to get more info.  If it says “sanctioned” the meet package should be available.

Here’s a list of tentative and confirmed upcoming nearby competitions (mostly) in Ontario and Quebec.  More meets and more details will be added as the information become available.  Note that meet entries and confirming meet information and entry dates are your responsibility.

Fri-Sun Jun 24-26th Colonies Zone LCM Championships, Middlebury, VT

Jamie and Lynn participated.  Full results at: http://www.middleburymuffintops.org/LCMChamps/Default.aspx.  Carleton finished 7th in the non-New England team category with 152 points.  Jamie was 10th man with 66 points, and Lynn 4th woman with 86.  This was, as usual, a fun meet hosted by the Middlebury Muffintops who were very accommodating.  (Of Lynn’s 12 events, she scratched two, changed one, and swam for an official split, rather than a final time, in four of them!)  Here’s how we did:

    Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps; 65-69): 1st: 50br (57.98 PB); 2nd: 50fs (35.55 PB), 50bk (47.73 PB), 100br (2:23.21), 50fl (55.08); 3rd: 100fs (1:29.85), 200fs (3:50.22), 100bk (1:58.19), 200br (5:26.12 Club Record); 4th: 200bk (4:08.40 PB) – updated club records at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/110626Records.pdf

    Lynn Marshall (Coach; 50-54): 1st: 100fs (1:05.41 Ontario Record), 200fs (going for 50fs split: 30.08 Ontario Record), 800fs (going for 200fs split: 2:17.65 National Record); 1500fs (going for 800 split: 9:38.04 World Record), 50bk (35.64 Ontario Record), 100bk (1:15.23), 200bk (going for 100 split: 1:14.88, 50 split 36.79 Ontario Record), 200fl (2:34.93 National Record); 2nd: 100br (1:33.23), 50fl (32.33 Ontario Record)

Great job, Eric!  Full results at: http://www.sportstats.ca

Eric Biklo (6pm Whitecaps; 50-54): 113th overall and 4th in age group in 5:08:16.2

Sat-Sun Jun 25-26th Tour de Lac St Jean

Nicole Le Saux (7:30am Earlybirds) and her husband, Jim Farmer (7:10pm Whitecaps) took part in this.  Too bad they had so much rain!

Sun Jun 26th Barry’s Bay Triathlon (750m/32k/8k; 87 participants)

Congratulations to Robert on his first ever triathlon!  And, well done, Brad, despite a very competitive age group.  Full results at: http://www.sportstats.ca

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  My turns are improving, but still need work – any suggestions?  Improving Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  Getting your turns right takes a lot of work.  Ask your coach for some tips, if you have specific questions.  Time/space permitting, we can also do short clinics in workout.  If you’re really serious about improving your turns there’s no substitute for a one-on-one lesson to ensure you know all the “ins and outs”!

Dear Coach:  Why don’t you like it when we do dolphin dives in the shallow end?  I Like Dolphin Dives

Dear I.L.D. Dives:  The dolphin dive drill is to learn the undulating motion in butterfly.  However, most swimmers use dolphin dives as a chance to rest and walk on the bottom of the pool, defeating the purpose!

Dear Coach:  I am still getting leg / foot cramps when I swim.  I’ve tried drinking lots of water, bananas, etc.  Any other suggestions?  Frustrated Cramping Swimmer

Dear F.C. Swimmer:  I came across a new suggestion (to me, at least) recently – mustard!  Check this out: http://www.health911.com/cramps_(muscle).  I also recommend bringing water or Gatorade (or similar) to the pool and drinking it during workout.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts at a time.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.  Another good resource, recommended by Mike Sims (6pm Whitecaps), is http://www.slowtwitch.com/.  Lots of free triathlon advice, a training log and challenges like the 100 runs in 100 days!

General Information: Program information, photos, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records, among other things, can be viewed at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.
Your input to this newsletter is most welcome, especially for the Swimmer Notes, Race Results and Ask the Coach sections!  To be added to or removed from the receiver list, just let me know (lynnmarshall@sympatico.ca).

Happy lengths!
