Sun May 8th Etobicoke Masters Try-Meet

Lynn booked her flight and hotel before realizing that this was really a “tri” meet open only to Etobicoke, Burlington and Thornhill.  Luckily the organizers took pity on her and allowed her to compete.  As no one from Thornhill showed up in the end, it was a Tri meet, after all.  Full results at: http://mymsc.ca/ShowMeet.jsp?id=395.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Have you heard of any issues around hydration and asthma?  Do those with asthma have hydration needs different to others?  Just Wondering

Dear J. Wondering:  I hadn’t heard of this before, but this article might be of interest:

     Dehydration makes Exercise-Induced Asthma Worse:

     http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1999/06/990607071643.htm

Dear Coach:  What’s with the lack of water pressure in the showers?  It seems to have changed since the shutdown?  Soapy Swimmer

Dear S. Swimmer:  The shower heads have been replaced with low-flow heads in the interest of environmental conservation.  We hope that you will appreciate the importance of this change.

Dear Coach:  I am doing my first Ironman Triathlon this summer.  In preparation, should I do my swimming in the pool, the lake, or both?  How many times per week should I swim?  How many times should I swim the full 3.8k distance before the race?  A Triathlete

Dear A. Triathlete:  It all depends what your goals are.  Do you just want to be sure that you can finish without worrying about your swim time, or do you want to do a good swim time?  I would think the second one (a good swim time), so my advice is based on that.

In my opinion, it's very difficult to get a good workout in open water.  In other words, I think it's too easy to swim slowly (more slowly than you think you are swimming!) when you are in open water.  I think this is because, first of all, it's difficult to find other swimmer(s) who are your speed (and it's hard to push yourself when you are alone).  Secondly, without a pace clock (or coach!) and knowing exactly how fast you are swimming (like in a pool), it's easy to fool yourself into thinking you did a certain distance when it was actually less.  So, from the point of view of keeping very "swim-fit", I think pool training is better.

That said, if you are at all nervous about open water or need to get used to a wet suit, then some open water training, just to build confidence is a good idea.  Practicing sighting (swimming in a straight line) is also a good idea.  If doing the full 3.8k before the event will also help you build your confidence, then, by all means do that once (or maybe twice -- I wouldn't recommend more than that, and not very close to the race, either).  However, in my opinion, swimming the full distance won't be too difficult for you, so interval training (like we do at Masters) will be more beneficial that a lot of long swims.

I would think that swimming once per week in the lake and two or three times per week in the pool (e.g. with Masters) would be a good compromise.  As the race gets nearer, reduce the distance, and bring it down to a max of 3 swims per week.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts at a time.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.  Another good resource, recommended by Mike Sims (6pm Whitecaps), is http://www.slowtwitch.com/.  Lots of free triathlon advice, a training log and challenges like the 100 runs in 100 days!
