Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

 - Congratulations to Steve Morton (x-Whitecaps “A”), Beth Marshall (x-Whitecaps “B”), and Rowan on this update from Steve: “I would like to reserve another child safety supervision spot.  This one three years after this coming February.  Beth and I are expecting a baby brother for Rowan (now 2 years old) in February.  Meanwhile, I'm getting Rowan ready for triathlons:
http://picasaweb.google.com/stephen.c.morton/2010_Photos?authkey=Gv1sRgCOmnpoGb86mFZw#5544764652523278226”.

 - Congratulations to Linda Rossman (7:30am Earlybirds), Associate University Librarian at Carleton, who is retiring at the end of this month!

 - Congratulations to Nicole Le Saux (7:30am Earlybirds) for winning the gold medal at the recent Canadian Immunization Conference for her paper presentation on Rotavirus.  See: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/canadian-immunization-conference-childrens-rotavirus-vaccine-all-but-wipes-out-us-cases/article1830657/.

 - The South Carleton High School swim team, coached by Hilary March (6pm Whitecaps) did very well at their final meet, placing 9th overall, despite having only one club team swimmer.  Hilary coached one boy who had never swum seriously before to a first place 58 second 100m freestyle!  Well done!!

 - Claudia Cronin-Schlote (Saturday Coach and ROCS Coach) and John Hawes (ROCS Coach) recently won the Sports Category in the annual “Celebration of People Awards” for their work with disabled swimmers.  Congratulations to you both!  Full details at: http://rocs.ca/NewsArticles228.aspx and http://www2.citizenadvocacy.org/celebrationofpeople/en/finalists/.

 - Thanks to Mary Ann Obertier (7:10pm Whitecaps / Saturday Earlybirds) for this joke from Sat Dec 11th:

What is your favourite swimming drill?     The “fire” drill!

 - Here’s the latest update from George Tombler (x-6pm Whitecaps) and his wife, Poppy.  George recently had a cataract operation, and while he hasn’t noticed much difference yet, the doctor says that things are progressing well.  His back is still bothering him, but we do hope to see him back swimming sometime next year.  Poppy had a melanoma removed from her cheek, and the doctor did such a good job that that side of her face, according to George, “now looks better than the other side – less wrinkles”!

 - Rod Haney (7:30am Earlybirds) sings with the Capital City Chorus, an all-male Barbershop-style choir.  They will be performing at the Dominion Chalmers United Church at 8pm Fri Dec 17th and Sat Dec 18th.  Full details at: http://www.capitalcitychorus.org/dbpage.php?pg=annualshow&_navlink=176.

 - Ursula Scott (7:30 Earlybirds) sings with the Orpheus Choral Group, which is performing its final Christmas concert on Sat Dec 18th, 7pm. St. Paul's High School, 2675 Draper Avenue, Ottawa.  There is no admission charge but freewill offerings accepted.

Olga Koteklo, the 91-yr old Track Star:

Thanks to Tamsin Douglas (7:30am Earlybirds) and Lucie Boudreau (8:30am Earlybirds) for bringing this to my attention.  Here’s someone we can all hope to emulate as we age – wow!: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/28/magazine/28athletes-t.html?_r=2&emc=tnt&tntemail1=y

Fall Session Summary

First a big thank you to Mits Kachi (Whitecaps 2 and 3, and Saturday Coach), and to the other Saturday coaches this term: Tim Kilby, Claudia Cronin-Schlote, and Blake Christie.

Many thanks to Mits for bringing home-made banana bread for the last evening workouts, and to Angela Davis (7:30am Earlybirds) for bringing home-made bread with icing and cherries for the last morning workouts.  A huge thank you also to the morning group for the chocolates and massage coupon, and to Linda Rossman, Lois Frankel and Debbie Lee who swim in the 7:30am Earlybirds “not so fast lane” for the “not so fast” cooker – what a great idea (though, I don’t like to call it the “slow” lane)!

Here's the summary of the attendance and time trials for the Fall session.  If you notice any errors or omissions, please do let me know.  Those of you who earned awards (perfect attendance, top 3 most improved overall, top 3 fastest overall, relay winners overall) will receive certificates early in the Winter term or by e-mail.

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Fall session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

Twenty-six women and sixteen men improved in at least one event!  The most improved male and female are both new swimmers who started this term and improved by whopping amounts over the course of the term.  The most improved overall is Ahmed Doha (8:30am Earlybirds) who has improved his 50fs by 15.9 seconds (31.8sec/100m) in the last 6 weeks.  At this rate, he will have the world record in March, and finish before he starts by May!!  Barbara Levine (6pm Whitecaps) improved her 400fs by 63.6 seconds (15.9sec/100m) during this term – another amazing improvement.  Second most improved male was Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps).  He improved his 100fs by 23.1 seconds.  He was followed closely by Paul Kane (7:10pm Whitecaps), who improved his 200fs by 37.3 (18.7sec/100m).  Rounding out the top three for the women were Erin Kelly (6pm Whitecaps) who improved her 200fs by 20.0 (10.0/100m) and Shauna Ironside whose 100IM improved by 9.8 seconds.  Mike Mopas (7:30am Earlybirds) improved in no less than five different events this term!

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  Eleven women and five men scored over 400 points in at least one event.  The top three women all out-scored the men this term.  First was Hilary March (6pm Whitecaps) with 615 for 30.2 50fs.  Next was Val Walker (6pm Whitecaps) with 576 for 2:46.5 in 200IM, followed by Maureen Mahoney (7:10pm Whitecaps) with 546 for 2:32.3 in 200fs.  The top three men were Freek Sluis (6pm Whitecaps) with 532 for 28.1 in 50fs, followed closely by 518 for 28.4 in 50fs by Nathan Fudge (6pm Whitecaps).  Don Wells (6pm Whitecaps) was third with 483 for 5:04.6 in 400fs.  Hilary, Nathan and Don all scored over 400 points in four different events.

All those improving and all those scoring over 400 points, as well as the top 3 improvements and the top 3 times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the relays.

Many thanks to all of you who participated in the time trials!

Fastest Three Times in Each Event:

The numbers in parentheses below the event indicate the number of female and male, respectively, time trials in that event (some swimmers may have done more than one time trial of the same event).  If times are really close, more than 3 swimmers are included.  Note that only those over 18:00 are shown for the 800.  Those under 18:00 should swim the 1500 instead!

Race Results: (Please send in your results, and/or let me know if I missed your name!!)

Sat Dec 4th Technosport SCM Swim Meet, U of Ottawa

Two Carleton swimmers participated: Mark Blenkinsop (Earlybirds) and Lynn Marshall (coach).  Results should be available soon at: http://technosport.ca/results/results.htm.  Mark figured we’d have a close race in the 100IM.  I was sure he’d win.  I was right, but it was pretty close (and we weren’t even in the same heat)!  The updated club records are posted at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/101204Records.pdf.

Mark Blenkinsop (30-34): 100fs 1:01; 50fl 29.7; 100IM 1:13.45

Lynn Marshall (45-49): 100fl 1:09.75; 50fl 32.50; 50bk 34.69 (club record and PB); 200fs 2:13.39; 100IM 1:13.49

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Why do you say “descend” when you want us to get faster?  Shouldn’t it be ascend, as in ascend or increase the effort?  Confused Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  We use the term “descend” as you are descending the amount of time it takes for each swim when you get faster.  Unfortunately, for most of us, comparing effort levels doesn’t always give us what we want.  Sometimes we work harder, or feel like we’re working harder, and actually go slower.  Effort is more abstract (subjective) whereas the time is concrete (objective)!

Dear Coach:  I have a friend who can swim in shallow water but has a severe fear of deep water due to a near-drowning experience as a child.  Do you know of lessons available taught by an expert in dealing with this sort of problem?  Looking for a “Swim Shrink”

Dear L.f.a.S. Shrink:  Carleton offers private and semi-private lessons for adults that are taught by the lifeguards.  I know that there have been adults with fear of water who have taken these lessons in the past, and the guards are good with this, though I'm not sure if they fall into the “expert” category.  Lessons are usually offered Mon evenings (open to all) and Sundays (women only).  I'd suggest that you phone the Aquatics Coordinator, Steve Baird, 613-520-2600 x8444 to find out if there's a lifeguard who would meet your girlfriend's needs.

Dear Coach:  Due to other commitments, neither the mornings nor evenings work well for me for the Winter term.  Can you recommend a weekly swim or stroke improvement program to help me stay motivated and on track?  Missing Winter Term

Dear M.W. Term: First, there are a couple of Carleton Masters groups that require a smaller time commitment:

Saturday Earlybirds (just once per week Sat 8:15-9:25am)

Whitecaps III (just twice per week Tu/Th 8:10-9:10pm)

Assuming that neither of those works for you, another option is to look at Carleton's adult learn-to-swim lessons.  These are geared to a "lower" level than Masters, but the top level "Aqua Adults 3" would at least provide a group atmosphere with some stroke-improvement guidance from a lifeguard.  These lessons are once per week for 50min.  For Winter they run on Sunday evenings 6:05-6:55pm.  There are 2 sessions: Jan 16-Feb 13, and Feb 20-Apr 3rd.  Details at: http://onlineca.activecommunities.com/CUAthletics/Activities/ActivitiesDetails.asp?ProcessWait=N&aid=386.  There are also women's only Aqua Adult lessons same dates but earlier in the day: 12:50-1:35pm (45min each): http://onlineca.activecommunities.com/CUAthletics/Activities/ActivitiesDetails.asp?ProcessWait=N&aid=390.

Carleton also offers private and semi-private (if you have a friend who wants to join you) lessons taught by a lifeguard (much cheaper than my lessons :-) -- the dates are the same as above but times are a bit more flexible (though only 30min): 11:40-12:10, 12:10-12:40, 12:40-1:10, 1:10-1:40pm, all women's only:

http://onlineca.activecommunities.com/CUAthletics/Activities/ActivitiesDetails.asp?ProcessWait=N&aid=447

And also (mixed: men and women times): Sun 6-6:30, 6:30-7pm and Mon 8:10-8:40, 8:40-9:10pm

http://onlineca.activecommunities.com/CUAthletics/Activities/ActivitiesDetails.asp?ProcessWait=N&aid=389

And if that doesn't work, there's always attending public swim with or without your own copy of a Masters workout to swim on your own.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.

General Information: Program information, photos, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records, among other things, can be viewed at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.
Your input to this newsletter is most welcome, especially for the Swimmer Notes, Race Results and Ask the Coach sections!  To be added to or removed from the receiver list, just let me know (lynnmarshall@sympatico.ca).

Happy lengths!
