Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

 - Congratulations to Kristi Dean (Coach) who is expecting baby #2 on October 8th (when Regan will be 18 months old!).

 - Lois Frankel (7:30am Earlybirds) extends an invitation to all to attend Carleton’s School of Industrial Design 32nd Annual Graduation Exhibition this weekend. The show takes place from Sat Apr 17th – Tue Apr 20th at the Carleton University Art Gallery from 10am to 5pm daily.  This year’s show highlights design concepts for furniture, interactive products, Paralympics sports equipment and a range of other innovative product solutions.  It is especially interesting for families whose kids are looking for a “cool” career path that blends math, science and creativity.  For directions call 613-520-5672.  See also: http://www.id.carleton.ca/exhibition/.

 - George Tombler (6pm Whitecaps) reports that his wife, Poppy, will be coming home from the Montfort Hospital on Tue Apr 20th.  She is now walking with the help of a walker after breaking her pelvis.  George is still having blood clotting issues and is back on steroids and seeing another specialist next week.

 - Lisa Hans (x-6pm Whitecaps) is a member of the “Chorus of Townspeople” in the Savoy Society’s “Yeoman of the Guard” by Gilbert and Sullivan, being performed at the Centrepointe Theatre Wed Apr 21st thru Sun Apr 25th.  Full details at: http://www.ottawasavoysociety.org/

 - Romy Schaffenburg (6pm Whitecaps) is a member of Ottawa’ Coro Vivo choir.  Their next performance is on Sat May 1st at St Joseph’s Church, 151 Laurier E; tickets and info: 613-841-3902.  The choir will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Major and Jose Angel Lamas’ Popule Meus.  Full details at: http://www.corovivoottawa.ca/

 - Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) is the director of “Blood Brothers” running at the Gladstone Theatre from Apr 8th to May 15th, see: http://thegladstone.ca/.

Deep End Drinking Fountain:  The drinking fountain at the deep end (by the garage door to the pool back room) is now working again!!

Swim Suits for Sale:  The suits range in brand, style, and colour.  The most expensive women’s suits are $40 and the most expensive men’s suits are $25, with most suits less than that.  The swim suits are available for browsing whenever Lynn is coaching – just ask!  Men's polyester suits now available in size 32-36, and some new women's thin strap suits in 32-38.

Caps and Goggles to Borrow:  Lynn always has a “lost and found” bag full of spare caps and goggles to borrow if you forget (or break) yours.

50c Swim Caps:  Triathlete and x-Carleton Masters swimmer Ellen Pazdzior and Joanie Conrad (8:10pm Whitecaps) have kindly donated a large number of mostly new latex swim caps.  The money raised by selling these for 50c will go towards the $45 annual fee to register Carleton Masters with Masters Swimming Ontario.  Just ask Lynn if you’re interested in looking at these.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Sat Mar 13th Arthur Inglis Technosport Meet

The results are now available at: http://mymsc.ca/ShowMeet.jsp?id=319.  Congratulations to Larry Durr (7:30am Earlybirds, swimming for TECH) who was a member of a Canadian Record setting relay team in the 280+ (sum of ages) age group 4x50 free relay with Mike Olsen, Pat Angus, and Pat Niblett.

Larry Durr (7:30am Earlybirds; 70-74): 1st 100br (1:42.20), 100IM (1:34.78), 4x50FR (2:38.25 Canadian Record)

Madelayne DeGrace (7:30am Earlybirds; 25-29): 1st 50fs (35.94), 100IM (1:30.77); 2nd 50fl (40.33)

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Where’s a good place to swim while the Carleton pool is closed.  Addicted Swimmer

Dear A. Swimmer:  Pools that have fairly cool water temperatures and public swims that have few children and organized lane swims include U Ottawa, Plant, and Champagne.  Note that the U Ottawa pool closes on May 1st for two weeks maintenance and the Champagne pool is 25yds, not 25m, so you’ll be extra fast!  Here’s the U Ottawa schedule: http://www.geegees.ca/sites/all/themes/geegees/schedules/Natation_Swimming.pdf, and the City of Ottawa schedules (select the pool you are interested in and click “search”: http://city.ottawa.on.ca/residents/parks_recreation/swimming/schedules/index_en.html.

Dear Coach:  How do I swim a 400 rev IM dr?  Confused Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  This is a 400m reverse IM drill, so there is 100m of each stroke, but they are done in reverse order, thus: 100 free drill, 100 breast drill, 100 back drill, and 100 fly drill.

Dear Coach:  It seems that the 6pm Summer Whitecaps time is wrong in the registration system.  It is listed as 10:30-11:30am instead of 6:00-7:10pm.  Another Confused Swimmer

Dear A.C. Swimmer:  Unless you click on the detailed class schedule, the only time displayed is the time of the first class.  You see the time as 10:30-11:30am as the 6pm Summer Whitecaps starts on a Saturday..

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)
