Swim for Haiti: Jan 21-22nd

Louis Bérubé, who swims in the Carleton early morning MWF public swim, is organizing a Swim-a-thon for Haiti to take place this Thu Jan 21st and Fri Jan 22nd at the Carleton pool.   All Masters swimmers in all groups, plus anyone swimming in public swim, and even those not currently swimming at Carleton are welcome to participate, but you are under no obligation (the short distance IM workout will run as usual).  The idea is to raise money for Red Cross and Doctors without Borders in Haiti, as well as to collect any unused medications you may have to send there.  I’d recommend that you ask your sponsors to go with a flat rate (rather than per length) as it will make collecting easier!  We also recommend you ask for cheques (rather than cash) as they are easier/safer to deal with.  A pledge form can be found at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/swimforhaitipledge.pdf.  We will also have some pledge forms at workout.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask Lynn or Mits, or to contact Louis directly at (613) 558-9897, decision@trytel.com, or 37 Irving Ave., Ottawa ON K1Y 1Z2.

Women’s Lockers

Fran Craig (Customer Service) has this update on the lack of lockers in the women’s change room:

All lockers will be removed and a new locker system will be installed by mid February to mid March 2010.  All temporary lockers will be converted to half lockers and additional banks of lockers will be added wherever we can find space.  This will substantially increase our storage capacity.  I will be posting notices confirming this project’s timeline when I receive the final work orders.  There is some light at the end of the tunnel.”

Race Results: (Please send in your results, and/or let me know if I missed your name!!)

Sun Jan 17th Brockville Masters Meet

Lynn Marshall (Coach) was the only Carleton swimmer participating.  She traveled to Brockville with x-Carleton swimmer Marty Raymond, who recently returned from 6 months in Afghanistan with the military.  Marty is still getting back in shape after his tour, and Lynn managed to trip on a curb on Friday and is rather bruised.  Despite that, we managed to win our events (in my case, I was lucky to be the only one in my age group)!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  For those who are interested in prescription goggles, Speedo Vanquisher Optical goggles are available from Sports Experts but they are often out of stock.   You can also buy them at http://www.amazon.com at US$15 per pair.  I got 2 pairs including shipping for about $47 Canadian including the cheapest shipping option, and they arrived in 3 days.  Lina Vincent (6pm Whitecaps)

Dear Coach:  There are never enough women’s lockers in the evenings.  Can something be done about this?  Frustrated Swimmer

Dear F. Swimmer:  Something is being done – see note near the top of the newsletter.  Please be patient just a few more weeks!
