A reminder that all labs start on Wednesday and end on Monday for the rest of the term. Thus tutorial lab #8 starts Wed Nov 11th at 8:30am and ends Mon Nov 16th at 2:30pm.
- November 6th:
Someone left a calculator in ME4390 after L5 (Fri 1pm). I'll bring it to class. Let me know if it's yours. Also, a clear water bottle was left at the front of ME4390, I believe after L4 (Fri 11:30am). It is still in the lab.
- November 6th:
We will go over the written midterm in class on Tue Nov 10th (Sections A and B) or Wed Nov 11th (Section C). I will bring the midterms that were not picked up during Quiz #3 to class. As we go over the midterm you may ask questions about the midterm and midterm marking. Note that the sample solutions and marking scheme are already posted on the web site. After we have gone over the midterm in class, you will have an opportunity to submit your midterm for remarking, as per the following:
- Midterms may be submitted for remarking between the end of the lecture where we go over the midterm (Nov 10/11th) and the end of the lecture one week later (Nov 17/18th). No exceptions.
- Midterms submitted for remarking must have, on or attached to the front page, a detailed explanation of what you want remarked and why, with reference to the marking scheme. "I deserve more marks for Q1(i)." is not sufficient. I expect something like: "In Q1(i) I made a mistake in calculating f(Xroot) on the first line. I carried this mistake through the rest of the table. The marking scheme states that if a mistake leads to other values being incorrect but they are calculated correctly based on the previous mistake. I have highlighted these values and believe that I should get 1.5 more marks."
- All midterms will be remarked by me (not the TAs). I reserve the right to look at all questions, and your mark may stay the same, go up, or go down.
- Regardless of when you give your midterm to me, all midterms submitted for remarking will be returned in the lecture after the deadline (Nov 19/20th).
- November 4th:
Someone left a calculator in ME4390 after L6 (Wed 11:30am). I'll bring it to class. Let me know if it's yours. Update: This calculator found its owner.
- November 3rd:
Please note that my office hours for tomorrow: Wed Nov 4th are from 12:55pm to 1:30pm only. Sorry for the late notice. Please send an e-mail if you have a question and cannot attend those times.
- November 3rd:
There is no "Practice for Quiz 3" (or 4 or 5) Assignment.
- November 3rd:
demoByHand.m with lecture 15 has been corrected (xxy = sum(x.*y) should be sxy).
- November 2nd:
A reminder that Quiz 3 runs Wed Nov 4th to Mon Nov 9th and will focus on root finding, minimization/maximization, and solving systems of linear equations. You will be able to pick up your midterm after you complete Quiz 3. You must show ID to get your midterm, and cannot pick up midterms for other students, and/or get your midterm before your lab section. We will go over the midterm in class on Tue Nov 10th / Wed Nov 11th. No questions about the midterm will be answered until then!

Lab Quiz Notes:
-
You must write your lab quizzes with the section in which you are registered.
- For the lab quizzes, please remember to bring your student card. You may also bring an approved calculator, blank paper, and a pen. Nothing else is permitted. In particular, no USBs, phones, etc. are permitted. Lab quizzes are 65min in length. For lab quizzes, you will use the labtest submit program, which is in G:/2606/labtest. The regular submit program doesn't work when the internet is down. Be sure that you can find the Matlab reference (G:/2606) as that is the only reference (other than "help" in Matlab) that you may use.
- Quiz #1 (Lab #3: Sept 28th to Oct 2nd) covers root finding. Details below under Sept 20th.
- September 22nd:
The lab marks (above) have been reposted with some corrections.

Lab #3 (Mon Sept 28th to Fri Oct 2nd) will be Quiz #1. It will cover root finding. Be sure that you are familiar with writing anonymous functions, plotting (fplot and plot), and writing scripts and function-files to do root finding. If you are able to complete all parts of Lab #2, including the bonus part, you will be in good shape for the quiz.
- September 18th:
The marks for the first tutorial lab have been added above. Look under the last 4 digits of your student number, and, if applicable, the first letter of your last name to find your marks. As this is a manual process, mistakes are possible! If your mark is incorrect, please e-mail me with your name, lab section you are enroled in, lab section where the missing marks were given to you, name or description of the TA who marked the missing part, and which marks are missing. The more details, the fewer pieces of paper I have to re-check!
- September 17th:
The PASS sessions for this week are at the times listed above. For next week, we hope to change one of them -- stay tuned!
- September 16th:
I had a question about function ezplot, which you may have used in ECOR 1010. If you create an anonymous function f, then ezplot(f) will plot f from -2pi to 2pi, with an xlabel of x, ylabel of y, and title of the mathematical expression of f. We will not use ezplot in ECOR 2606. We will use plot and fplot.
- September 16th:

The lectures for ECOR 1101 A (Mechanics I) are 6:00-7:30pm Tue/Thu, the same as our PASS sessions. Depending on how many students this affects, we may consider changing one PASS session. Please let me know if you are in ECOR 1101 A and want to attend an ECOR 2606 PASS session.
- September 15th:
Just to be sure everyone is clear on how the tutorial labs work, here's a quick summary. You need to do the lab, get it checked, and submit it:
- Doing the Lab: You may work on the lab anywhere, anytime. Obviously, you need access to Matlab. If you don't have Matlab on your computer, you may use the lab computers. ME4377 and ME4390 are available 24/7, except when being used for another course (e.g. ECOR 1606), or a test (ECOR 1606 or 2606). Of course, you can work on your lab during your regular lab period, and ask questions.
- Getting Your Lab Checked: You must get your lab checked by a TA in the lab. TAs are available during all regularly scheduled labs (in purple on the weekly schedule) and some additional tutorial labs (in green on the weekly schedule). The last couple of labs before the deadline are likely to be very busy, so waiting until the last minute is not a good plan!
- Submitting Your Lab: You must submit your lab from a machine in ME4390 or ME4377 while the lab is open. The first 3 tutorial labs (labs 1, 2, and 4) open from Mon 8:30am to Fri 2:30pm. The last 3 tutorial labs (labs 6, 8, and 10) open from Wed 8:30am to Mon 2:30pm. You can submit your lab as many times as you like. Only the last version you submit is saved. If you are partially finished your lab, you can submit it, and then later "View" it and then "Save" it to continue where you left off.
- September 13th:
The answers to assignment #1 and the practice question for quiz #1 have been posted.
- September 11th:
Note that while the Monday morning (8:30-11:30am) lab should be in ME4377, that lab may not be available. If it is still closed, the lab will take place in ME4390 in conjunction with the ECOR 1606 lab.
- September 11th:
The lab and TA schedule has been posted.
- September 10th:
CASIO: fx-570ES PLUS has been added to the list of approved calculators (above).
- September 10th:
Your account for the lab computers (ME4390/ME4377) is:
username: whatever comes before "@cmail.carleton.ca" in your Carleton e-mail address
password: your student number
- September 10th:
Yero's office hours have been changed (see above).
- September 10th:
The cost of the student version of Matlab is US$50. There is no Canadian web site.
- September 10th:
You may submit your Lab #1 from either ME4390 or ME4377 between 8:30am on Monday and 2:30pm on Friday. (You cannot submit from any other lab or from home.) You can ask questions and/or get your Lab #1 checked by a TA during the regular lab sections (in purple on the week schedule), and during the green times where TAs are available. There may not be any TAs in the lab on Monday between 8:30 and 11:30am, at least for the first few weeks. I will post an updated weekly schedule over the weekend.
- September 8th:
Yero's office hours have been added (above).
- September 8th:
ATIVA: AT-30S has been added to the list of approved calculators (above).
- September 4th:
Yero's PASS presentation has been added to the lecture 1 material. The study session details have also been added under PASS above, and can also be found on the Weekly Plan, also above.
- September 3rd:
The textbooks can be purchased at the University Bookstore.
- August 28th:
Classroom teaching and learning activities, including lectures, discussions, presentations, etc., by both instructors and students, are copy protected and remain the intellectual property of their respective author(s). All course materials, including PowerPoint presentations, outlines, and other materials, are also protected by copyright and remain the intellectual property of their respective author(s).
Students registered in this course may take notes and make copies of course materials for their own educational use only. Students are not permitted to reproduce or distribute lecture notes and course materials publicly for commercial or non-commercial purposes without express written consent from the copyright holder(s).
- August 4th:
Note that classes run on a Monday schedule on Fri Sept 4th. Thus, as labs do not start until Mon Sept 14th, there are no ECOR 2606 lectures or labs on Fri Sept 4th.
- August 4th:
Both text books are available on reserve in the library.
- August 4th:
As per the course outline, there are 11 labs. Labs 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 are quizzes, each worth 5% of your grade (25% total). Labs 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 are tutorial labs, each worth 1% of your grade (5% total). As there are actually six tutorial labs and it's possible to get up to 5 out of 4 on each of them, you can actually get up to 7.5/5, i.e. up to 2.5 bonus marks. The tutorial labs will be marked by the TAs during the lab session. In addition, you will submit your lab via the submit program to prove your attendance.
- August 4th:
Please check that your calculator is on the updated approved list (above). If it is not, and it is not a graphing or programmable calculator, please e-mail Dr. Marshall from your cmail account with the brand and model number for approval. Please note that Casio calculators with a "P" in their name are programmable, and are not permitted.
- August 4th:
For those interested in purchasing Matlab, the US$50 Matlab Student version (https://www.mathworks.com/store/link/products/student?s_iid=coabt_sv_abtus_bod) is sufficient for ECOR 2606. That said, Simulink (and other packages) may be useful in other courses, e.g. SYSC 3600, so you may want to consider the US$99 Matlab and Simulink Student Suite. Note that you may purchase Simulink (and the other packages) separately later, if needed.
- August 4th:
The first lecture will be Wed Sept 2nd (Section C) or Thu Sept 3rd (Sections A and B). Labs start Mon Sept 14th.
- August 4th:
