Intent this page is a jumppad to pages that describe everything
you need to know about Wiki Wiki.
What is Wiki Wiki?
- a web-based collaboration tool
- allows everybody to modify a Wiki web page directly from the browser
- provides automatic link management by storing page titles in a database
- it is easy and fun to use!
Surfing Wiki Wiki: two useful pages:
Editing:
- Syntax: this is what you need to know once you clicked on the Edit Text link at the bottom of a Wiki page:
- Hyperlinks are created automatically provided that the name you have typed is an entry in the Wiki Wiki database (ie is the name of an existing page)
- see HelpPage to learn how to do bullets, emphasis, horizontal lines...
- http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?MoreAboutMechanics for complete details
- Editing links, including pictures, applets...
- numbers between square brackets (like this [1]) can be used to either point to HTML pages, include pictures (GIF or JPG) or applets. All you have to do is click on the Edit Links link at the bottom of the page while in Editing Mode, to enter the URL of the file in front of the number that you referred to in your square bracket.
- Creating a new page:
- edit an existing page (preferably a related one) by typing the name of the page you want to create.
- save the page. The name you have typed will appear, with a question mark in front.
- click on the question mark, and it will open the new page in Editing Mode.
- Using the locking system effectively:
- a soft lock is put on a page that is being edited. The lock is removed when the person hits the Save button in Editing Mode.
- The system however allows you to override a lock and force edit, if you are sure that the person who owns the lock is not working on the page anymore.
- the lock will NOT be removed if you hit Back while in Editing Mode. If you decide not to change a given page after all, hit Reset to undo the changes you made, then Save to free the lock.
Associating your own name to your computer's host name: Wiki Wiki displays the host name that has last edited a given page. The host name is followed by a question mark, that allows you to click on it to enter your name and email, so that it displays your name instead of the host name.
Suggestions:
- it is considered good practice to sign your modifications to a given page by leaving your name and date of modification.
- also try not to delete anybody else's input without his agreement!
